San Antonio's military bases San Antonio isn’t called "Military City" for nothing. Five military bases touch its borders. Fort Sam Houston was activated in the mid-1800’s and still retains it’s historic roots. In the 1930’s and 40’s the Army Air Force established a major presence in the area, opening Brooks AFB, Randolph AFB and Lackland AFB. Two major military hospitals are here: Wilford Hall Medical Center and Brook Army Medical Center, completed in 1996. BRAC 2005 recommends the consolidation of Wilford Hall Medical Center (WHMC) and Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio into one medical region with two integrated campuses known as San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC). Kelly AFB closed several years ago, but most of the military missions remain as part of Lackland AFB. Kelly USA - Port San Antonio has replaced a substantial part of the old aircraft rebuild operations. Boeing and Lockheed are major players and enjoy substantial support. Brooks AFB is now operating as the first City-Base test for the Armed Forces. It'll be many years before the new concept can be determined to be viable as a way to reduce federal expenditures at other installations.
